Hair transplant is a surgical procedure and it involves the extraction of hair either by strip removal or by follicular unit extraction. After the extraction, a site must be created to plant them in the affected area. The site creation involves making small holes to place extracted hair follicles. As you can see, it involves manipulation of the scalp, which may result in pain.
In fact, most people are pleasantly surprised by the low level of discomfort they feel during the procedure. The reason behind this fact is the use of modern anesthesia. Modern anesthesia works so well that the patient does not feel any pain during the extraction or plantation phase. The most pain a patient feels is the pinch of needles used to administer local anesthesia to the scalp. After the administration of anesthesia, the patient does not feel any pain.
However, there is a little swelling after the procedure, if a strip is removed to obtain donor hair. This may cause stiffness in the neck, which may persist for a few days or little more than a week. Patients are prescribed painkiller for this phase; however, many patients report that they do not need these painkillers.
Now, it is clear that you can have a hair transplant without the fear of pain. If this was the reason you were hesitating – well there is no reason that you cannot have a hair transplant now!
